Venice in 3 1/2 days
I was involved in a group project with two of my other classmates and we created a three and a half day itinerary of Venice. It is targeted towards current and future Casa Artom students. The itinerary was designed keeping the theme of citizenship in mind and includes some of our favorite spots in Venice (touristy and non-touristy). Enjoy!
Each day, over 60,000 people visit Venice as tourists. As temporary citizens of Venice, Casa Artom students do not fit the typical tourist mold. As Chimamanda Adichie said, “there is danger in a single story, for it perpetuates stereotypes.” Venice can often be stereotyped by tourists as a place to only take gondola rides or see St. Mark’s Basilica. This itinerary will be perfect for Casa Artom students by encouraging them to visit both touristy and non-touristy locations, therefore allowing them to see Venice through both the eyes of a tourist and a citizen. The goal of our project is to create a weekend itinerary, utilizing our knowledge of the city from living here. Since students frequently go on academic walking tours of the city, we chose places we found on our own. We want to show Casa Artom students which spots in Venice, including campos, restaurants, and hidden spots around the city, are special places to us. We hope that some of these spots will transform from empty spaces to meaningful places for other Casa Artom students, as they did for us.
Beginning Thursday at 2 pm...
1. San Toma
Bread and chocolate shop. Raisin bread highly recommended!
2. San Stae Gelato and Campo San Giacomo dell’Orio
Grab a gelato at San Stae (recommended: Mela, Canella, and Marscapone) and sit on one of the benches in San Giacomo dell’Orio to take in the experience. Spend as much time as you possibly can sitting there and soaking up the Venetian life. After you finish your gelato, go inside the church of San Giacomo dell’Orio to admire the architecture and the cool interior, along with the amazing works of art inside of it.
3. L’Osteria di Filo
For a quick glass of wine or snack in a cool spot, head down the street to L’Osteria di Filo. Grab a spot inside and enjoy the intellectual artsy student vibe.
4. La Zucca for dinner
After, pass back through the campo and head to La Zucca for dinner. Be sure to reserve in advance. (recommended: pumpkin flan)
